Diagnostic study for Listeria monocytogenes isolated from brain and meat of sheep in Mosul city

This study included collect of 150 samples from brain and meat of sheep from the slaughterhouse and local butchers shop in Mosul city. 50 sample from each (brain, cutting meat, and minced meat) which used for detection of listeria monocytogenes. The International Standard Organization (ISO) methods were used for isolation. The isolated bacteria were diagnosed according to bacterial morphology, culture, and biochemical characteristics. 10 isolates were obtained, which included 2(4%) isolates from the brain of sheep, 3 (6%) isolates from cut meat and 5(10%) from minced meat. Virulence factors tests were used for bacterial isolates which include, lecithinase, lipase, protease, esterase, and hemolysin. Antibiotic sensitivity test for bacterial isolates was also used for some antibiotics. The results indicated that all isolates were sensitive to Ampicillin, Gentamycin, Chloramphenicol, and resistant to Nalidixic acid. However, they showed variant sensitivity to other antibiotics. In conclusion, this study documented that L monocytogenes can be isolated from brain and meat of sheep in Mosul city.

The effect of thyme (Thymus daenensis) supplement on growth and hygienic parameters of broilers meat

The antibacterial effect of Thyme species was relatively approved but the effect of this plant on bacterial population of intestine in chickens and consequently on bacterial load of chicken meat following administration of thyme was not investigated. For evaluation of thyme effect on growth indices, microbial contamination of meat and microbial population of cecal content, 180 broiler chicks were divided into 4 equal groups with 3 replicates and were reared until 42 days. Chickens in different groups were treated with different doses of thyme (0, 0.25, 0.50 and 1 percent) in diets. The weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion rate were calculated weekly. In the end of 42 days old, all chickens were slaughtered. The population of Escherichia coli per gram of cecal contents and contamination of meat with Escherichia coli were assayed. The data showed that supplement of 0. 5 and 1 percent of thyme to diet elevated weight gain and decreased feed conversion rate. Furthermore, addition of 0.5 and 1 percent of thyme to diet can decrease microbial population of cecal content and meat. In conclusion, the addition of thyme to diet may improve growth rate and hygienic parameters in chicken meat.

Effect of oil palm frond treated with ammonia on some carcass traits and meat chemical composition of Bali bulls - Indonesia

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oil palm frond treated with ammonia on the carcass weight (CW), rib eye muscle area (REMA) and some meat chemical composition in Bali bull in order to maximal optimization of this oil palm frond. Sixteen Bali bulls, weighing initially between 120 and 140 kg, were randomly divided in to four groups of four animals each. The bulls were placed individually in wooden pens with cement flooring in an open bull barn. The bulls were each randomly assigned in a 60-day experiment. The four treatments included control diet (P0), diet containing 25%, 50% and 75% of ammonia treated OPF for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively. Randomized Complete Block Design was followed with four treatments and four block of replications applied in this experiment. The results showed that there were no significantly different effect (P>0.05) at treatment on CW, REMA and the meat chemical included water, crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE) and ash content. The findings reffered that, treatment P2, 50 of ammonia oil palm frond (OPF) tend to increase CW, REMA and the meat chemical content of Bali bulls.
